I started this project a short time before I left CSM and have worked and probably also over-worked it. I wanted to research the visibility of women in the public sphere and spent a great amount of time and energy and executed numerous trials within print, painting and video. All that work is condensed into one painting and a short video.
The work originates in the series of paintings titled “48 portraits” that Gerhard Richter created for the German Pavilion to be shown at the 1972 Venice Biennale. The paintings were 48 portraits of important persons within literature, science, philosophy and music – and not one single woman among them.
